Hamsters choose their food too?

It has been many weeks since we bought two Robrovskis home. The shop had recommended this food pack for hamsters which offers a mix of ikan bilis (anchovies), nuts, wheat grains, corn and seeds. This pack costs about USD$5 and can last about 8 weeks.

The Robrovskis adapted well to their new environment. Their favourite hangout - the wheel, is most suitable for their active nature. Despite their running around the whole day, they drank incredibly very little. However, they got a huge appetite. I usually top up the food dish once every two days and the Robrovskis seem to like their food alot.

It was recently that I realised these hamsters choose their food. They prefer pumpkin seeds most. This has been observed several times. Each time I clean up their home, I realised leftovers in the food dish includes corn and wheat grains. They don't seem to like wheat grains. Maybe, these grains are tasteless?

what a mess... look closer.. only wheat grains left...

Cleaned up the mess leaving only the wheat grains...

food dish placed back in the cage for a day to see if Robrovskis would finish up the grains

Out of curiousity, I decided that I would not top up the food dish but leave the grains behind. It will be another day before I top up more food.
